🐻✨ We've captured a rare Sun bear (Helarctos malayanus)on our camera trap! This incredible sighting gives us a unique glimpse into the life of one of the world's most elusive creatures.

Sunbears, known for their small size and distinctive chest patches, are rarely seen, making this capture extra special. The sun bear is currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, facing threats from habitat destruction, illegal wildlife trade, and poaching.

  • πŸ‘€Do you act differently when someone is watching? 🐘 Turns out elephants do!

πŸ”New research by Vesta Eleuteri et al., including our colleague and friend Lucy Bates, on elephant communication reveals intriguing findings about their social interactions. Elephants intelligently adjust their gestures based on whether their audience can see them, suggesting they use intentional communication similar to humans. They mix vocalizations and physical gestures in various combinations, with the most common being rumbles paired with ear flapping, especially among females.

This study not only highlights the complexity of elephant greetings but also shows their capability to communicate intentionally across different sensory modes. It sheds light on the sophisticated ways in which a species, distant from humans on the evolutionary tree, can still exhibit advanced social behaviors and attention to detail in communication.

  • 🐘 πŸ“’ Our new blog from the Kariega Game Reserve is live!🌟 In December 2023, we joined forces with the Kariega Foundation to expand habitats by removing internal fences, giving herds more space to roam and explore. Now, our BTEH researchers are studying the effects on herd behavior and population health. Want to get involved in elephant research and experience something beyond the ordinary safari? Join us! 🐾 Check it out!

  • πŸŽ‰ Happy Freedom Day to all South Africans!
πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ Today marks 30 years of democracy since the historic elections in 1994. At Bring The Elephant Home, we emphasize the importance of transforming from exclusive to inclusive conservation, putting local communities at the heart of decision-making, and ensuring equality and justice for all beings. In the spirit of Ubuntu, we promote meaningful coexistence and environmental and ecological justice for all, especially for communities that are negatively affected by elephants, ecological destruction and economic globalization 🌍

Let's celebrate the hard-won victories and keep pushing forward towards equality, justice, and unity πŸ’š
